Once upon a time in a tiny town on the south coast of Newfoundland there were thousands of stories to discover. When you arrive in St. Lawrence you’ll first be greeted by ocean views and access to nature, but you’ll really be drawn in by our people and their stories. There’s history everywhere you look.
Starts with a Name
St. Lawrence was named by a group of shipwrecked sailors in 1583 and people began settling in the town permanently in the mid-1700’s. This is only the beginning of a place which has experienced triumph and tragedy, and most everyone who lives here is only too happy to tell you their town’s history.
Land and Sea
Our story starts with the ocean. St. Lawrence’s history is firmly rooted in the fishery and every captain and fisherman here will tell you about the perils of the sea. Our town became home to successful, thriving businesses, rivaling those of the capital city. We grew and grew, only to be devastated by a massive tsunami in 1929. We recovered and soon a fluorspar mine was opened, creating a second industry, and our town began to flourish again.
Our Legacy, Our Values
Our Second World War history is famous, as we rescued shipwrecked American navy men from two war ships. In gratitude, the US Navy built a hospital in the town. We also became world renowned for soccer, winning Soccer Team of the Decade for 30 years in a row, and our pitch is one of the most Historic Places in Canada.
Come Have a Look Around
In St. Lawrence we don’t just know our history, we display it and we live it. We’ve dedicated walking trails and memorials throughout our town to the extraordinary actions of our people. When there’s a big game, the whole town shuts down! You’ll hear family history at dinner tables, in passing on the street, and experience it for yourself in our museum and gift shop.
Eyes Forward
Though visiting our town is like a step back in time, we’re also focused on the future. We have created Explore St. Lawrence to help support the people and businesses in our community. It’s an exciting time to visit St. Lawrence, whether you want to be steeped in history or become part of our bright future.
